Basic rule: Just add -ing to the base verb.
Ex. work - working walk - walking.
When it is one syllable verb (Consonant + Vowel + Consonant) DOUBLE THE LAST CONSONANT.
Ex. sit - sitting, run - running, get-getting
If the verb ends in Vowel+ Vowel + Consonant or Vowel + Consonant + Consonant,DO NOT DOUBLE THE LAST CONSONANT.
Ex. need - needing,clean - cleaning,check - checking
* Exception: If the verb ends in -w,-y,-x.
Ex. snow - snowing,fix - fixing,enjoy -enjoying.
In longer verbs (two syllables or more) DO NOT DOUBLE if the last part of the verb is not stressed.
Stress
happen= HAP-pen→ happening /visit=VIS- it→visiting
But if the last part of the verb is stressed, and it is Consonant + Vowel + Consonant,
DOUBLE THE LAST CONSONANT.
Ex. prefer - preferring ,begin - beginning
Verbs that end in -e, drop the -e and add -ing.
Ex. smile - smiling write - writing.
Verbs that end in -ie, drop the -ie and write -y+ ing.
Ex. die - dying
SPELLING RULES FOR PLURAL NOUNS
ReplyDelete1. Add –s to form the plural of most nouns.
Ex:student – students / picture –pictures.
2. Add –es to form the plural of nouns that end in s, ss, ch, sh, x, z.(This ending adds another syllable)
Ex: bus – buses / dress – dresses / church –churches / wish – wishes / box – boxes

3. Add –es to form the plural of nouns that end in o preceded by a consonant.
Ex: potato - potatoes
Exception: Add only –s to plural nouns ending in o that refer to music.
Ex: piano – pianos

Ex: radio – radios.
5. To form the plural of nouns that end in y preceded by a consonant, change the y to -ies. Ex: dictionary –dictionaries.

7. To form the plural of certain nouns that end in f or fe, change the f to -ves.
Ex: half – halves / wife – wives.
Exceptions: roof-roofs / safe-safes / belief-beliefs / sheriff-sheriffs / chief-chiefs dwarf-dwarfs
8. Some plural nouns are irregular.
Ex: woman – women / child - children / man - men / mouse - mice / person - people
foot – feet / tooth - teeth
9. Some nouns do not have a singular form.
Ex: (eye) glasses / pants / clothes / trousers / shorts.
